Veterans

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, on November 11, that honors military veterans, who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of WWI. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

The Commissioners put a high degree of importance on the recognition of Veterans. The willingness of America's veterans to make sacrifices for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude. The District provides permanent cast bronze medallions mounted on solid brass rods inserted in a concrete base. The medallions show the war in which the veteran served. If service was in peacetime the medallion simply shows the word "Veteran."

At dawn on Memorial Day American flags are inserted onto the bronze medallions and remain in place until dusk on Veterans Day. For those veterans who have made the supreme sacrifice four additional American flags are placed at the corners of their graves.

There are over 300 Veterans interred in both cemeteries including more than 70 Civil War veterans in the Lynden Cemetery.
